The decisive document is the rulebook attached to the bet. The score when play stopped is evidence about the match, not by itself a universal instruction for grading every market.
Match result and bet settlement are separate decisions
Under the current IFAB Laws of the Game, a standard match has two 45-minute halves plus time allowed by the referee. An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules or organisers decide otherwise. IFAB Law 7
That tells us what football authorities may do with the fixture. It does not settle a private bet. A governing body can order a replay, award a result or resume a match; the sportsbook still applies the market definition and house rules accepted when the wager was placed.
Three questions usually come before the score:
Was the market already unconditionally decided?
Did the relevant period reach the completion threshold in the operator’s rules?
Will the match resume inside the stated time window?
Different answers can coexist on one bet slip.
A finished event can survive an unfinished match
Suppose a football match is abandoned in the 70th minute after a goal. A “first goalscorer” market may already have a final answer, while the full-time result and total goals remain open to change.
bet365’s current abandoned-match rule says a match stopped before 90 minutes is treated as no action except where the market was fully determined. It gives first player to score and time of the first goal as examples that can stand after a goal has been scored. bet365 soccer rules
The phrase “already determined” is stricter than “currently winning”. A bet on over 0.5 goals is final after the first goal because later play cannot make it false. A bet on under 2.5 goals at 1–0 is not final because resumed play could add two goals. A full-time leader in the 70th minute is ahead, not yet guaranteed to win the 90-minute market.
This is the same reason a suspended market is not necessarily a settled one. Our explainer on what happens when a sportsbook suspends a market covers the trading control; abandonment adds a separate event-status problem.
House rules disagree on thresholds and clocks
Named rulebooks show why a generic answer is unsafe.
| Operator example | Treatment described in the published rule | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| bet365 | Before 90 minutes: no action, except a fully determined market | Check whether the selected market had already been decided |
| Pinnacle | Completed periods can stand; uncompleted periods are void if the match is not completed within 12 hours; a referee ending the match after at least 85 minutes is an exception | The completed period and the operator’s completion window both matter |
| FanDuel Puerto Rico | Determined bets stand; other selections are void unless a restart is announced within the rule’s three-day framework | A scheduled restart can delay the final settlement decision |
Pinnacle’s current soccer section states that completed periods such as the first half can have action even if the match is void. Its rule also describes a 12-hour completion window and an exception where the referee ends the match after at least 85 minutes. Pinnacle betting rules
FanDuel’s Puerto Rico rules use a different mechanism. They say already decided bets stand, while other selections are void unless a restart is announced within the specified window. FanDuel Puerto Rico house rules
These are examples, not a ranking of consumer protection. FanDuel publishes different jurisdiction-specific rulebooks, and operators can define sports and markets differently. The location and version attached to the account matter.
DraftKings’ current general betting rules also distinguish cancelled, postponed and concluded events. That vocabulary is a warning: “cancelled”, “suspended”, “abandoned” and “rescheduled” may trigger different clauses even when ordinary conversation treats them as synonyms.
Ninety minutes does not always include the whole broadcast
Football betting commonly defines a match-result market around scheduled regulation time plus stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties unless the market says otherwise. A “to qualify” market can use a different endpoint.
This matters during knockout football. A match can complete its 90-minute result market at a draw and continue on television for another 30 minutes and a shoot-out. Nothing was abandoned, yet the full-time selection may already be settled.
The product label must therefore be read with the rule. “Match result”, “90 minutes”, “to qualify” and “lift the trophy” are different propositions.
The same discipline applies to data. A live scoreboard is a convenience, not always the settlement source. Our map of how live sports data reaches a betting app shows how collection, feeds and trading systems sit between the field and the screen.
Parlays do not simply disappear
When one selection is void, a standard accumulator may be recalculated using the remaining legs, effectively treating the void selection as a non-runner. Same-game parlays can have their own rules because the selections are correlated and priced as a combined product.
There is no safe universal formula. A house rule may distinguish an already losing leg from an unresolved leg, or void the whole same-game product. The bet receipt and market rules should identify which structure was accepted.
This is also why “my team was winning” is not enough evidence for a complaint. The record should include the operator, jurisdiction, bet identifier, market wording, timestamp, event status, settlement and the exact rule version.
What to check before contacting support
Start with the market name on the receipt, not the headline score. Then record:
whether the match was abandoned, temporarily suspended or officially concluded;
the minute and completed periods;
whether the outcome could still change;
the operator’s restart or rescheduling window;
the official competition decision;
any jurisdiction-specific rulebook linked to the account.
If the published rule supports a different settlement, preserve screenshots and use the operator’s complaint process. Regulatory and alternative-dispute routes depend on the jurisdiction; this article is not legal advice or a prediction about an individual case.
Abandonment turns one match into several clocks: the referee’s clock, the competition organiser’s decision, the operator’s restart window and the finality of each market. A correct settlement begins by identifying which clock the bet actually bought.
