A team wins 2–1. A pre-match Asian handicap bet on that team at −0.5 wins in full; at −0.75, it wins on half the stake; at −1.0, the stake comes back. The match result is identical. The accepted line changes the settlement.

Those are hypothetical examples for an adult reader checking a bet receipt, not recommendations about which line to choose. The arithmetic below uses completed, pre-match football singles. Live markets, shortened fixtures and bets covering only one half need their own period rules.

Whole and half lines: adjust one side of the score

An Asian handicap adds or subtracts a specified number of goals from the selected team's score for settlement. A negative sign takes goals away; a positive sign adds them. Apply that adjustment to the selected side once, leaving its opponent's score unchanged.

Paddy Power's published football rules distinguish whole, half and split handicaps. With a whole line, an adjusted tie returns the stake: a push. A half line cannot produce an adjusted tie when the actual scores are whole numbers.

Here is the same hypothetical 2–1 win on three lines. These are worked calculations using that rule, not quoted prices or actual tickets.

Whole and half lines: adjust one side of the score
Selected team's lineAdjusted score from a 2–1 winSettlement
−0.51.5–1Full win
−1.01–1Push: full stake returned
−1.50.5–1Full loss

A zero line changes neither score. A drawn match therefore pushes; a win or loss settles in the same direction as the selected team's result. On +0.5, a drawn match becomes a winning adjusted score. On −0.5, that draw becomes a loss.

The market name matters here. A three-way handicap offers a separate handicap-draw selection. Paddy Power's three-way rules make a selected team at −1 a loser when it wins by exactly one goal; the handicap-draw selection wins. An Asian −1 line pushes in that situation. A receipt saying only “handicap” is not enough to distinguish them.

Quarter lines split the stake into two equal parts

The Asian Handicap section of William Hill's British-English help edition defines a quarter line as the midpoint between adjacent whole and half lines. Half the stake goes to each component.

That means −0.75 splits into −0.5 and −1.0. A 2–1 win clears the −0.5 component and ties the −1.0 component: half wins and half is returned. At −1.25, the same one-goal win ties −1.0 but loses −1.5, producing a half loss.

The table applies William Hill's split rule to hypothetical results. “Draw”, “win by one” and “lose by one” describe the selected team's actual result, before either adjustment.

Quarter lines split the stake into two equal parts
Quarter lineHalf-stake componentsSettlement at the stated result
−0.250 and −0.5Draw: half push, half loss
+0.250 and +0.5Draw: half push, half win
−0.75−0.5 and −1.0Win by one: half win, half push
+0.75+0.5 and +1.0Lose by one: half loss, half push
−1.25−1.0 and −1.5Win by one: half push, half loss
+1.25+1.0 and +1.5Lose by one: half push, half win

When both components win, the bet is a full win. When both lose, it is a full loss. A quarter-line football bet cannot produce a full push through score arithmetic: its half-goal component cannot tie. A separately voided market is another matter.

“Quarter” describes the goal line. It does not mean a quarter of the stake is refunded, or that the stake is multiplied by two. A 20-unit bet remains a 20-unit bet, divided into two 10-unit parts.

Half win: calculate profit and total return separately

Take a hypothetical 20-unit stake at decimal odds of 1.90. These numbers illustrate settlement; they are not an available offer. Assume an ordinary cash single, with no commission, tax, promotional conditions or rounding adjustment. Both half-stake components use the quoted 1.90 price.

For a half win, the winning 10-unit part returns 10 × 1.90 = 19 units, including its stake. The pushing 10-unit part returns another 10. Total return is 29; profit is 9, after subtracting the original 20.

For a half loss, one 10-unit part is returned and the other is lost. The account receives 10 units back, leaving a loss of 10.

Half win: calculate profit and total return separately
SettlementTotal return on the 20-unit stakeProfit or loss
Full win38 units+18 units
Half win29 units+9 units
Push20 units0 units
Half loss10 units−10 units
Full loss0 units−20 units

This is Betting Tribune's educational calculation from the stated stake and decimal price, using the split settlement rules above. A half win earns half the full-win profit at that price; it does not return half the full-win payment. Accumulators and promotional stakes fall outside this example.

Which part of the match supplies the score?

The examples use a completed match's applicable full-time score. For bet365's Great Britain football rules, the default is scheduled 90 minutes plus stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties, unless the market says otherwise. Its Result/Events/Half-Time rules also identify exceptions for friendlies and shorter or non-standard competitions. Do not apply a 90-minute assumption to every fixture.

Live Asian handicap requires another check. The bet365 English-language Asian Handicap guide says its in-play market counts the remainder of the game or half after the bet, ignoring earlier goals. That page is an English-language guide, not a verified country-specific contract for every reader. Check the version attached to your account before applying its rule.

A score already showing 1–0 when the bet is accepted can therefore matter differently from a pre-match 1–0 result. The line, the time of acceptance and the market's score convention belong together. For the separate clock issue, see whether football bets include extra time.

A pushed component is different from an abandoned match

The partial refunds above arise because one component ties after its handicap. Abandonment is governed by the operator's event-completion rules.

bet365's Great Britain abandoned-match rule generally voids bets when a match is abandoned before 90 minutes, except markets whose outcomes are already fully determined. That exception does not let a reader treat a current score as a completed Asian handicap result. The market and applicable exception still need checking.

Our guides to voids, pushes and dead heats and abandoned football matches cover those separate settlement questions.

For an Asian handicap receipt, reconstruct the calculation from the selected team, the signed line, the covered period and the accepted odds. Split a quarter line before pricing either half. That leaves a checkable answer about what should be returned, without implying that the bet was a good one to place.
