At a tournament using the Poker TDA's 2026 rules, a face-down release at showdown does not automatically end a hand. Rule 15 allows the player to table cards that remain completely identifiable and retrievable. Version 1.1, dated 21 September, is a voluntary tournament procedure, not a universal cash-room rule.

The discard pile changes the question

The muck is the discard pile. Rule 15 kills cards pushed into it or otherwise made irretrievable and unidentifiable. Remembering what a player held cannot identify the same physical pair inside a mixed pile. The tournament director must resolve disputed identification or tabling; retrieval cannot be assumed.

Proper tabling means all the hand's cards face up and clearly readable; Hold'em requires both hole cards under rule 14-A. Rule 14-C separately protects a properly tabled, obvious winner from being killed by the dealer. Our five-card comparison article explains why selecting one private card for a winning combination is different from showing only one.

An all-in waits for the remaining betting decisions

Rule 17 requires all remaining live hands to be opened without delay once someone is all-in and everyone else's betting action is complete. Covering players and side-pot hands are included; a losing hand cannot bypass that display.

Consider a fictional river sequence, with three players still in the hand. A moves all-in. B calls but retains chips. C also has chips and has not yet acted. C then makes a legal raise, and B calls it while retaining chips. No further action remains after that final call.

Only A needed to be all-in. B and C having chips behind does not create another round after the river. The rule 17 illustrations distinguish earlier streets where covering players can still bet.

Opening the cards does not combine the pots. Our side-pot reconstruction keeps those eligibility groups separate.

A non-all-in showdown has a separate exception

Under rule 18-B, the last live hand can win without showing when everyone else discards face down without tabling at a non-all-in showdown. That exception does not cancel rule 17's mandatory display.

PokerStars Live's tournament page adopts TDA rules with local variations. Its separate cash-game rules, rule 22, put card protection on the player and kill an unprotected hand touching a discarded card if ownership is uncertain. The event or house procedure matters before assuming retrieval is available.

In the river example, B's final call completes the trigger. Until then, another player still has a decision. Afterwards, all three live hands must be opened, although only one player committed their whole stack.
